Prophets in the Old Testament were holy men appointed and inspired by God to speak his Word to the Israelites. They were often called to preach Israel to covenant faithfulness, to warn of judgment, and to point forward to the coming of the Messiah.
Prophets in the New Testament are known as Apostles.
